Angular Siteco Design For The Berlin Brain

The offices of Foster and Partners (London) designed the new library construction that complements the college building for the Humanities Institute in Berlin-Dahlem. Foster’s new construction lends an additional 6,300 square metres for 650 reading stations and 700,000 books and a new form language. The five-storey, egg-shaped building is spanned by a double-layered, dome-shaped covering made of transparent and closed panels. Circular and angular forms dominate throughout the construction.

The five library storeys within the dome are constructed in a stairlike fashion to mirror the profile of the outer covering. The wave-like exterior closures give space for reading stations and peaceful work zones. The connection to the old building is also characterised by a technical and futuristic design:

The offices have been fitted out with 750 Comfit Plus surface mounted and pendant luminaires. The louvres, fixed with spring catches within the housing are LOR-optimised for use with T16 fluorescent lamping. A continuous row of Comfit Plus luminaires with spacing panel covers and mitre cuts within the long corridors follows the stair-like form. A custom pendant suspension has been used for the ceiling system. For the lighting of the shelving and transit ways, 3,000m of Comfit M luminaires in continuous rows have been installed incorporating VDU-compliant louvres and with a custom colour finish. The angular design and consistent form of the Comfit luminaire family are very well suited to the architecture of the building.

Siteco Lunis C Downlights with HIT high pressure discharge lamps have been used for the entrance area, Lunis downlights with compact fluorescent lamping  for the sanitary areas. Within the smaller lecture rooms Comfit recessed luminaires with darklight louvres (3 x36W TC-L) provide light. Luminaire arrangement, switching and illuminance level allow for uninterrupted lecturing and also for examination situations. The new complex resembles to some extent the form of a brain and has consequently been nicknamed ‘The Berlin Brain’.
